The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has announced the suspension of pension payments for persons appointed as Governors effective from 11th September 2024. This decision, detailed in a Gazette notification issued on 26yh September cites provisions of the Monetary Law Act, No. 58 of 1949.

According to the Gazette, no claims for pension payments will be accepted by the CBSL following the effective date. Additionally, it states that if any former Governor is subject to criminal investigations or court proceedings, their pension payments will be stayed or suspended until the conclusion of those proceedings.

This move marks a significant change in the financial arrangements for former Governors, emphasizing the bank's commitment to accountability and governance. The CBSL has not disclosed specific reasons for this suspension or any cases that may be under investigation.

Stakeholders and former officials are urged to review the implications of this policy shift, as it may impact the financial security of those affected.
