A major rescue operation is under way in the Channel after a boat carrying at least 100 people capsized, according to reports.

The French coastguard said about 10 people were in a critical condition and more than 50 needed medical treatment, according to Reuters.

TV channel France 3 quoted the mayor of Le Portel, Olivier Barbarin, as saying there were “around 10 people in cardio-respiratory arrest”.

French emergency services have been deployed since 1130am. It is understood that the incident took place in French waters and UK search and rescue vessels are on standby
