FR petition seeks acting IGP appointment

A Fundamental Rights petition has been filed with the Supreme Court, seeking an order for the President to appoint an Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Attorney-at-Law R.S.P. Ranasuriya submitted the petition, naming President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Attorney General as respondents.

On July 24, the Supreme Court issued an interim order preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from carrying out his duties as IGP. This decision followed the Court's granting of leave to proceed with nine petitions challenging Tennakoon's appointment. Among the petitioners is Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.

The Court also directed the President to appoint a suitable interim IGP during the period of the interim order against Tennakoon.
