The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to import eggs to stabilize the prices of cakes and other bakery products during the upcoming Christmas and Ramadan festive seasons.

This measure aims to ensure a steady supply of eggs needed by the bakery industry, particularly for cake production.

According to the Cabinet decision dated March 18, 2024, the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation has imported 224 million eggs to date. Of these, 95% have been distributed to consumers at an affordable price of Rs. 37 per egg through the Lanka Sathosa outlet network. The period allocated for egg imports ended on April 30, 2024.

This initiative is expected to help maintain reasonable prices for bakery products during the high-demand festive seasons, benefiting both consumers and the bakery industry.
