The Committee on Parliamentary Business, led by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, has scheduled an adjournment debate for tomorrow (July 11) to discuss the necessity of holding the presidential election within the legally mandated timeframe.

This decision was made following a motion proposed by Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the National People’s Power (NPP), and Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella.

The motion stipulates that the presidential election must take place between September 17 and October 16, 2024, in accordance with the Constitution and other relevant laws.

The debate will commence at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at 5:30 p.m., following the session for Questions for Oral Answers, confirmed Secretary General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera.
