The General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways has issued a stern warning, declaring that Station Masters and Railway Controllers who fail to report for duty by noon today (10) will be deemed to have vacated their positions.

The ultimatum follows a strike launched by the Sri Lanka Railways Station Masters’ Union from midnight yesterday (09), citing various demands including promotions. As a result of the strike, numerous trains, including office trains and night mail services to and from key destinations like Colombo Fort, Badulla, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Rambukkana, have been cancelled.

Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Ranjith Rubasinghe, emphasized that public transport services, including railways, are classified as essential services. Therefore, the strike initiated by the Station Masters’ Union is considered illegal. He further warned of strict disciplinary measures against those failing to comply with the return-to-duty directive.

In anticipation of potential disruptions to office train operations today (10), Rubasinghe assured the public that additional Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses have been mobilized. He also announced that free transportation will be provided on SLTB buses for passengers holding train season tickets.

The Sri Lanka Railways management urges all striking Station Masters and Controllers to promptly report for duty at their designated stations or the nearest railway station, ensuring the resumption of essential railway services without further disruption.
