Today, the Supreme Court's five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and comprising Justices Vijith Malalgoda, Murdu Fernando, Preethi Padman Surasena, and S. Thurairaja, dismissed the Fundamental Rights petition filed by a businessman. The petition sought to restrain the Election Commission from conducting the 2024 Presidential election. The court observed that the petition lacked merit and dismissed it in limine.

The Attorney General and several intervenient petitioners had raised preliminary objections, urging the court to dismiss the petition at the outset.
