President Ranil Wickremesinghe said today that Chamindra Dayan Lenawa, who filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court to halt the Presidential election, did so without consulting the President or his legal representatives, the President's Media Division said.

The petition, filed yesterday, seeks to prevent the Election Commission from conducting the Presidential election until the Court decides on the incumbent President's tenure.

The President's Media Division said that the government is aware of the petition and reiterated President Wickremesinghe's stance that the President's term is five years. The Division affirmed that the Election Commission is correct in proceeding with plans for the 2024 Presidential Election.
