Sri Lanka's average coconut prices have seen a significant increase, rising to 83,443 rupees per 1,000 nuts from 81,228 rupees, according to data from the Coconut Development Authority.
This rise was recorded at an auction held on June 27.
The auction prices have surged by 10 percent over the month of June and have climbed 32 percent from the lows of 62,900 rupees seen at the beginning of the month. The current prices are approaching the historic highs observed in the first quarter of 2023.
At the June 27 auction, the highest price for 1,000 coconuts reached 95,000 rupees, up from the previous high of 86,200 rupees. The lowest price also saw an increase, rising to 77,000 rupees from 66,000 rupees.
Out of 337,179 coconuts offered at the auction, 324,726 were sold. In the week leading up to June 20, wholesale prices for large nuts ranged from 95 to 110 rupees, while small nuts were priced between 85 and 90 rupees. Farmgate prices in Kurunegala were between 75,000 and 80,000 rupees per 1,000 nuts.
In addition, coconut oil prices ranged from 710,000 to 750,000 rupees per metric ton, and coconut shells were priced between 30,000 and 31,000 rupees per metric ton.
