A Sri Lankan delegation visiting Russia from June 26-27 to investigate Sri Lankans involved in the Ukraine war faced new challenges, including some individuals acquiring Russian citizenship, forfeiting Sri Lankan citizenship.
Led by State Minister of Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya, discussions with Russian officials focused on 17 Sri Lankans killed, compensation for families, locating missing individuals, facilitating returns, contract terminations, and payment regularization.
They proposed a joint committee to address issues, joined by parliamentarians, defense officials, and diplomats. Russia agreed to compensate victims and arrange ceremonies for the deceased. Challenges remain due to legal obligations of Sri Lankans in Russia.
