Former Member of Parliament Hirunika Premachandra has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

The former SJB parliamentarian was found guilty of involvement in the abduction and wrongful detention of a youth in the Dematagoda area on December 21, 2015, using a Defender vehicle.

The sentence was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja on Friday (28).

Premachandra was accused of abducting, assaulting, and wrongfully detaining the youth, Amila Priyanka Amarasinghe, who worked at a shop in Dematagoda.

Amarasinghe revealed that while employed at a textile shop in Dematagoda in 2015, he developed a relationship with a woman named Chamila Geethani who often visited the shop. Subsequently, he was abducted by individuals who arrived in a Defender, as he testified in court.

In 2017, seven individuals identified as Premachandra's supporters pleaded guilty, but the former parliamentarian did not plead guilty to any charges.
