The government is set to introduce new legislation aimed at curbing the destruction of wetlands, including addressing illegal constructions, according to Housing, Construction, and Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary W.S. Sathyananda.
During a recent media briefing, Sathyananda highlighted ongoing negotiations with various government agencies to achieve a unified approach to wetland conservation. The goal is to develop a comprehensive program that leverages collective expertise, positioning the country as a leader in wetland conservation and biodiversity protection
The media briefing was organized to announce the first conference of the International Wetland Park Association in Australia, New Zealand, and Asia. This conference will be held from June 17 to 21 at Diyasaru Park in Battaramulla.
"We are committed to enforcing stringent laws against the destruction of wetlands," Sathyananda stated. "However, as an organization, we cannot do this alone. We need the support of the people to effectively protect wetlands. Wetlands play a crucial role in addressing environmental issues, such as flood control, by providing 39% more water-holding capacity. Additionally, several initiatives are being planned to boost the economy by promoting wetlands as tourist attractions."
