Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, highlighted the multifaceted challenges posed by dengue fever, emphasizing its significant economic and social repercussions in addition to its health implications.
Speaking at a special news conference at the Presidential Media Centre, Dr. Samaraweera called for comprehensive public support to effectively combat the spread of dengue, stressing that the Ministry of Health alone cannot manage the crisis.
Dr. Samaraweera revealed that in the past five months, over 25,000 dengue cases and nine dengue-related deaths have been reported across the country. The specialist warned that the current flood situation could exacerbate the dengue outbreak, potentially escalating it to epidemic levels.
"Effective management of the disease is critical," Dr. Samaraweera stated. "Without the full cooperation of the public, our efforts will fall short. We must work together to prevent an epidemic that could have devastating consequences."
The call to action from the National Dengue Control Unit underscores the urgency of community involvement in mitigating the spread of dengue fever, particularly in light of recent environmental challenges.
