Tragedy struck at Kirinda Beach as a foreign couple lost their lives while bathing, according to police reports.
The victims, identified as a 35-year-old male and a 33-year-old female, both Indian nationals, succumbed to drowning despite initial rescue attempts after being swept away by strong waves. They were pronounced dead upon arrival at Debarawewa Hospital.
Investigations have revealed that the deceased were a married couple visiting Sri Lanka with their family when the incident occurred.
Kirinda Police have initiated further investigations into the heartbreaking incident.
