The death toll from the recent severe weather has increased to 30, with one additional fatality reported this morning, State Minister of Defence Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon announced in Parliament today.
Minister Tennakoon informed the House that the government has allocated Rs. 25,000 to the families of each deceased individual to cover funeral expenses. Discussions are ongoing to provide further compensation to these families.
In response to a question posed by SLPP MP Akila Ellawala, Tennakoon detailed the extent of the damage: 71 houses have been completely destroyed, and approximately 93,770 houses have sustained partial damage.
The Minister assured Parliament that steps are being taken to accurately assess the damages. Compensation will be distributed to affected families once the estimation process is completed.
