Police have called for public assistance to apprehend Kandaiah Vijayan, alias Abdul Rahman, who escaped custody after being arrested for the alleged rape of a nine-year-old girl in Talaimannar on February 15.
The suspect escaped from police custody after being transferred to the General Hospital Vavuniya. Vijayan, a resident of Kuchchaveli, Trincomalee, was initially arrested following a complaint by the girl's grandmother to the Talaimannar Police, reporting the child missing from their village.
Police later found the girl's body approximately 300 meters from her home. The girl was discovered wearing a dress, but her lower body was naked, leading police to suspect she had been raped.
