The National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) has mandated that all hotels cease offering discounts on alcohol products, stating that such practices are illegal.
In a letter addressed to a prominent star-class hotel in Colombo, NATA Chairman Dr. Alan Ludowyke disclosed that the authority has received multiple complaints about hotels with liquor licenses promoting discounts on alcohol purchases, including "Happy Hour" deals.
The letter highlighted that this practice is a direct violation of Section 37(2) of the NATA Act No. 27 of 2006. Offenders are subject to a fine of Rs. 50,000, with each director of the violating establishment deemed guilty of the offense.
NATA has ordered the hotel to fully comply with all provisions of the NATA Act No. 27 of 2006, as amended.
