The Grama Sevaka of Muniruppu Grama Seva Division of Vavuniya District was discharged from a case against him in the Colombo High Court for accepting a bribe of Rs. 10,000 by High Judge Aditya Patabendhi.
The judge discharged the accused, observing the contradictory nature of the evidence given by the complainant and the decoy who accompanied the complainant at the time the bribe was accepted by the accused.
The Judge also took into consideration the fact focused by Defense Counsel Lal Kularatna appearing with AAL Kalpana Pieris for the defense and said that during the leading of evidence of the witnesses the interpretation made from Sinhala into Tamil was erratic and inconsistent.
Judge Aditya Patabendi discharged the accused as the prosecution witnesses evidence were contradictory and also further considering the submissions made by Counsel Lal Kularatna
The accused was indicted in 2018 by the Commission to Investigate into Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from the complainant.
During the course of trial the prosecution led the evidence of the complainant and the decoy who accompanied the complainant when the bribe was given.
At this stage prosecution Counsel Sabry, Assistant Director (Legal) of the Commission admitted the facts focused by the defense counsel and sought court’s permission to represent the matter to the attention of the Commission.
