The Attorney General's Department informed the Court of Appeal that the Attorney General will not represent Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardane in a writ petition accusing him of omission and serious dereliction of duty related to the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.
The Centre for Society and Religion filed this writ petition seeking a credible investigation and appropriate actions against Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardane for his alleged failure and negligence leading to the 2019 Easter Sunday bombing.
During the hearing, presided over by Justices Sobhitha Rajakaruna and Dhammika Ganepola, Counsel for Nilantha Jayawardena stated their intention to present limited objections to the petition. The court rescheduled the petition for support on July 25.
The petitioners, including the Centre for Society and Religion, its Chairman Fr. Rohan Silva, and Easter Sunday bomb attack victim Surach Nilanga, named the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardena, and the Attorney General as respondents.
The petitioners seek a Writ of Mandamus directing the IGP and Attorney General to promptly implement the findings and recommendations of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.
Counsel Ermiza Tegal appeared for the petitioners, President’s Counsel Chandaka Jayasundera represented Nilantha Jayawardane, and Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara represented the IGP and Attorney General.
