President Ranil Wickremesinghe has no intention of amending the Constitution to extend his term of office or calling a snap general election, according to Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardana.
Speaking at the weekly cabinet briefing, Gunawardana addressed recent market turbulence caused by rumors of a potential snap general election before the presidential election. He clarified that the President is committed to holding the presidential election this year as mandated by the Constitution, with funds already allocated in the budget for this purpose.
When questioned about speculations regarding the dissolution of Parliament by June 15, Gunawardana dismissed these claims, stating there is no basis for such rumors and that the President has not informed the cabinet of any such plans.
"Various factions have suggested that a general election will precede the presidential election, creating significant controversy and market instability. These statements are merely the dreams of some individuals and were discussed in the cabinet meeting," Gunawardana said.
