The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lauded Sri Lanka's strides in implementing economic reforms, acknowledging the difficulties faced by the public in the process. In a recent statement, IMF Director of Communications, Julie Kozack, highlighted the noticeable improvements in key economic indicators as a testament to the effectiveness of the reforms.

"Macroeconomic policies in Sri Lanka are beginning to yield positive results," stated Kozack during a press briefing in Washington D.C. "Commendable outcomes include a rapid decline in inflation, robust reserve accumulation, and initial signs of economic growth, all while maintaining stability in the financial system."

Kozack emphasized the strength of the overall program performance, underscoring the progress made despite the challenges encountered. She highlighted the ongoing negotiations with external private creditors and the need to finalize agreements with Sri Lanka's official creditors as crucial next steps in the debt restructuring process. While domestic debt operations have largely been concluded, negotiations with external bondholders are still ongoing.

In April, IMF Director for Asia and Pacific Department, Krishna Srinivasan, acknowledged the positive trajectory of Sri Lanka's economic reforms but emphasized the need for continued efforts. "There is progress being made, both in terms of growth," Srinivasan remarked cautiously, noting the challenges that lie ahead.

According to the IMF, Sri Lanka is urged to strengthen its fiscal policy, enhance reserve building efforts, and bolster overall resilience. Staff-level agreements have been reached between IMF representatives and Sri Lankan authorities regarding economic policies, paving the way for the conclusion of the second review of the four-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) supported program and the 2024 Article IV Consultation.

Once approved by the IMF management and ratified by the IMF Executive Board, Sri Lanka is poised to gain access to approximately US$ 337 million in financing, providing a crucial lifeline for the country's economic stability and growth prospects.
