Sri Lanka to host first IORA Business Conclave

Sri Lanka is set to host the inaugural Business Conclave under its Chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), scheduled to take place at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo from May 28 to 29, 2024.

This significant event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, which currently chairs the IORA Business Forum.

The Business Conclave, themed "Sustaining Growth – Bridging Horizons," will focus on key sectors including smart agriculture, ICT, logistics, tourism, renewable energy, SME development, and women's empowerment.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the event aims to provide a platform for industry leaders to forge stronger economic partnerships and connections across the IORA Member States.

"This Conclave is a crucial step towards fostering economic cooperation and exploring new business and investment opportunities within the Indian Ocean region," said Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. "By focusing on vital sectors, we hope to bridge horizons and sustain growth for all member nations."

Participants at the Conclave will gain valuable insights and exposure to diverse business and investment prospects. The event is expected to attract trade delegations from the 23 IORA Member States and 12 Dialogue Partner countries, facilitating the building of synergies and collaboration among their counterparts.

Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Chairperson of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the importance of the event, stating, "The Business Conclave provides a unique opportunity for business leaders to network, share knowledge, and explore collaborative ventures. It is an honor to host this pivotal gathering in Colombo."

The Business Conclave will precede the IORA 26th Committee of Senior Officials Meeting, which is scheduled to take place from May 30 to 31, 2024. This subsequent meeting will further the discussions initiated during the Conclave, aiming to solidify strategies and actions for enhanced regional cooperation.
