In a significant move aimed at enhancing the continuity of secondary education, the Cabinet has approved the immediate commencement of General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (A/L) classes following the completion of the GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) examinations.

Cabinet spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardana announced the decision today, highlighting the logistical and educational benefits of this policy change. He noted that the Examinations Department typically requires a minimum of three months to release the results after the GCE (O/L) examinations.

"During this period, students often experience a break from their school education, which contributes to a decline in their motivation to pursue GCE (A/L) studies. This gap also leads to various social issues," Minister Gunawardana stated.

Recognizing these challenges, the Cabinet has decided that initiating GCE (A/L) education immediately after the O/L exams in 2024 is both practical and beneficial. This approach aims to optimize students' time management and ensure that teachers have sufficient time to cover the GCE (A/L) syllabus comprehensively, Minister Gunawardana explained.

The new policy is expected to address the educational and social concerns associated with the interim period between examinations, thereby fostering a more seamless transition for students advancing to higher secondary education.
