In response to reports suggesting their involvement in criminal activities like drug trafficking, the police conducted a two-day nationwide operation. This initiative aimed to address concerns that individuals engaged in illegal actions were residing in rented accommodations beyond their designated police jurisdictions. Directed by IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, the operation took place over the weekend (May 11 and 12) and focused on gathering and verifying information on temporary residents within each Grama Niladhari division, as authorized by Section 76 of the Police Ordinance Act.

During the operation, data was collected on 112,963 individuals from 37,183 families residing in rented houses and on lease across the country. Additionally, information was gathered on 34,133 individuals from 10,755 families residing in rented rooms. This comprehensive effort yielded details on over 178,600 people, including temporary residents such as house watchmen, housemaids, and caregivers.

Each individual's information will undergo cross-referencing with systems such as the Arrested Monitoring Information System (AMIS), the Automated Fingerprints Identification System (AFIS), and the Police Narcotics Bureau. This process aims to determine whether any of these individuals are connected to criminal incidents.
