In addressing concerns surrounding the composition of Sri Lanka's squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee, Upul Tharanga, dismissed accusations of favoritism. Tharanga asserted that the selection process prioritized talent, fitness, and discipline, ensuring a balanced and formidable 15-member squad ready to take on any challenge at the tournament in the West Indies and USA.
During a media briefing, Tharanga addressed various aspects of the squad selection, including injury worries regarding skipper Wanindu Hasaranga and fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, affirming their fitness for the upcoming tournament.
Explaining the inclusion of Dunith Wellalage, Tharanga emphasized his all-round capabilities and the strategic advantage his left-arm spin offers, particularly in conditions akin to those expected in the US.
Tharanga elaborated on the selection of Dananjaya de Silva in the main squad and Bhanuka Rajapaksa as traveling reserves, stating that it was the outcome of extensive deliberations involving selectors, coaches, and the captain.
When questioned about the utilization of key all-rounders Dhananjaya, Angelo Mathews, and Dasun Shanaka, Tharanga indicated that Mathews and Shanaka would take precedence in the playing 11 over Dhananjaya de Silva.
Addressing Kusal Janith Perera's absence, Tharanga expressed regret but pointed to recent form as a decisive factor despite Perera's undeniable talent.
Despite the omissions of Perera and Rajapaksa, Tharanga underscored the squad's strong batting lineup featuring players such as Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, and Dasun Shanaka.
Tharanga assured that Matheesha Pathirana's injury reports suggested full participation throughout the tournament.
Regarding the addition of Vijayakanth Viyaskanth as traveling reserves, Selector Ajantha Mendis cited Viyaskanth's performance edge over spinners Akila Dananjaya and Jafrey Vandersay as a decisive factor.
Tharanga rebuffed allegations of overlooking discipline in player selection, emphasizing its significance in representing the nation and safeguarding its reputation.
The Sri Lankan team is set to depart for the USA tomorrow, geared up for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 challenge.
