The Department of Meteorology in Sri Lanka has issued a severe lightning warning for several provinces across the country, including Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, North-western, Uva, and North-central provinces.
In addition, Mannar and Vavuniya districts are advised to be on high alert.
Residents are strongly urged to take precautionary measures to minimize the potential damages caused by the anticipated lightning activity.
Seeking shelter indoors is paramount during thunderstorms, while avoiding areas such as under trees and open spaces like paddy fields and tea plantations.
To ensure safety, the public is cautioned against using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during the storm, as they pose a risk of electrocution. Motorists are advised to refrain from using open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats due to potential hazards from temporary localized strong winds.
Furthermore, fallen trees and power lines are likely during severe thunderstorms, adding to the risks. In case of emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact local disaster management authorities promptly for assistance and guidance.
