The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA), Dr. Vijith Gunasekera, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department.

His arrest follows nearly 10 hours of questioning regarding the importation of substandard medicines into the country.

Previously, Dr. Vijith Gunasekera was removed from his CEO position following a decision by the NMRA Board of Directors. This decision was based on allegations related to importing substandard medicines and allegedly destroying confidential NMRA documents.
