The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has reported a significant increase in the country's official reserve assets, reaching USD 5.43 billion in April 2024.

This marks a notable uptick from the USD 4.96 billion recorded in March 2024.

However, it is crucial to note that this figure includes proceeds from a swap agreement with the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), amounting to approximately USD 1.4 billion.

These funds are subject to conditionalities on their usability, implying certain restrictions or conditions attached to their utilization.

The rise in official reserve assets underscores a positive trend in Sri Lanka's financial stability and foreign exchange reserves. Such reserves play a crucial role in supporting the country's economy by providing a buffer against external shocks and ensuring the stability of the exchange rate.

The swap arrangement with the PBoC reflects the close economic ties between Sri Lanka and China, highlighting ongoing efforts to bolster financial cooperation and enhance liquidity in the face of economic challenges.
