The Special Investigation Department of the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) arrested a person yesterday for defrauding money using the names of high officials from the Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry. The suspect, claiming to be a doctor, offered jobs in Israel's agricultural sector.
The suspect, residing in Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07, falsely promised foreign jobs through ministry officials and posed as a doctor. He lured victims to the Foreign Employment Ministry and Bureau in Narahenpita to extort money.
Investigations revealed that he defrauded Rs. 7,650,000 from nine victims. He was arrested at the Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry based on a complaint and remanded until April 3 by the Colombo Magistrate's Court.
The suspect's wife, involved in the scam, is under investigation.
Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara urges the public not to pay anyone for agricultural jobs in Israel. Sri Lankans have legitimate employment opportunities in Israel's agricultural sector under a bilateral agreement, the Minister emphasized.
