An investigation has been launched following the disappearance of a T-56 firearm belonging to a police officer stationed at the Wilgamuwa Police Station in Matale while on duty.
Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said the weapon went missing at the security post while the police officer assigned to duty at the main gate.
He said statements have been recorded from the police officer and an investigation is underway to determine whether the firearm was stolen or if there were other reasons behind its disappearance.
