Sri Lanka's Commercial High Courts have recently undergone significant upgrades with the installation of redesigned witness boxes, marking a notable step towards enhancing the country's judicial infrastructure.
According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka, the installation of the redesigned witness boxes at Commercial High Courts No. 1-4, as well as the establishment of the new Commercial High Court No. 5, have been successfully completed. The announcement also mentioned that the new courthouse, Court No. 5, will soon be open for public use.
The redesigned witness boxes feature essential improvements, including wheelchair access ramps and dedicated seating for witnesses. Additionally, the facilities are equipped with translation services, ensuring accessibility and adherence to international standards.
These upgrades are part of the ongoing efforts by the Justice Sector Reform Programme (JURE) to support personnel and institutions within the justice sector. The aim is to enhance overall administration, transparency, accountability, sensitivity, and responsiveness.
Funded by the European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, JURE is a collaborative effort jointly implemented by the UNDP Sri Lanka and UNICEF Sri Lanka, with facilitation provided by the Ministry of Justice in Sri Lanka. Through initiatives like the upgrade of witness boxes in Commercial High Courts, JURE seeks to strengthen the justice system and promote fairness and inclusivity in legal proceedings across Sri Lanka.
