A police sergeant, stationed at the Matara Division Crime Investigation Unit, has been arrested for his role in facilitating the failed escape attempt of organized criminal Nandun Chinthaka, known as 'Harak Kata', from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The 36-year-old sergeant, residing in Ahangama, was detained by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID).
The IGP delegated the investigation of 'Harak Kata's' escape attempt to the TID.
During the investigation, conducted via telephone data analysis, the police recovered a motorcycle and a safety helmet intended to aid 'Harak Kata's' escape from the CID.
It was disclosed that an individual named 'Sudda' was also implicated in transporting the helmet. Further investigation into 'Sudda' revealed a change in his residential address.
Additional telephone analysis uncovered communication between 'Sudda' and a police sergeant from the Matara Division Crime Investigation Unit.
Subsequent investigations unveiled that the arrested sergeant had communicated via WhatsApp with Jayasekara Withanage Ruwan Chamara, alias 'Midigama Ruwan', who orchestrated 'Harak Kata's' escape plan from abroad.
