Three officials have been suspended in connection with an incident in which two foreign nationals were allegedly assaulted by a group of employees at Nawalapitiya railway station.
Railways General Manager H.M.K. Bandara said that two station masters and a railway controller have been suspended, and a comprehensive investigation is underway regarding the incident.
Two British nationals, traveling on the Podi Manike train from Colombo to Badulla, became involved in a disturbing incident on Tuesday (05). Their journey began at Kandy railway station.
Following an inquiry, Railway Superintendent N.J. Indipolage revealed that the pair had been removed from the train for occupying seats in the first-class compartment despite holding third-class tickets.
Sumedha Somaratne, President of the Sri Lanka Railways Station Master’s Association, confirmed that a railway guard had instructed the foreign passengers to disembark.
Despite these instructions, the two foreigners refused to vacate the compartment, leading to their removal from the train.
