With temperatures soaring, the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Meteorology Department has issued a heat index advisory for several provinces across Sri Lanka. Anticipated to reach a 'Caution' level, the perceived temperature on the human body is expected to rise notably in areas within the North-Western, Western, and Southern Provinces, along with the Ratnapura district.
Notably, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle, Matara, and Hambantota are highlighted in the caution level.
The advisory underscores the potential risks, warning of fatigue and heat cramps with prolonged exposure and activity under these conditions. Continued exposure could escalate to heat exhaustion and even heatstroke, emphasizing the need for precautionary measures.
To safeguard against the heat, the Meteorology Department advises the public to stay hydrated, seek shade frequently, and opt for lightweight, light-colored clothing. Furthermore, they urge citizens to check on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and sick, who may be particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
