Police Inspector Duminda Jayathilaka, the Officer In-Charge of the Organized Crime Division at the Colombo Crime Division, has left the country due to death threats targeting him and his family from members of underworld gangs.

Among those who allegedly threatened him is Kanjipani Imran.

Inspector Duminda Jayathilaka departed on February 14, reportedly bound for France from Bandaranaike International Airport, accompanied by personal security guards, as a precaution against the threats looming over him and his family.

The threats escalated following the arrest of suspects involved poisoning of two suspects at the Aduruppu Veediya police station. Following multiple arrests made during this probe, he reportedly received numerous death threats.

One prominent figure among those threatening him is notorious drug trafficker 'Kanjipani Imran'.

Due to the gravity of the situation and the persistent threats from underworld figures, the Colombo Crime Division reportrdly provided Inspector Duminda Jayathilaka with an official firearm for his protection. Despite this measure, he opted to leave for France, ensuring the safety of his wife and seven-year-old daughter in a secure location within the country.

Sources within the police department reveal that Inspector Jayathilaka was instrumental in apprehending several homicide suspects last year. In addition, he played a significant role in seizing a substantial number of illegal firearms and hand grenades during the same period.

Inspector Jayathilaka was aslo involved in investigating an attempted escape by 'Harak Kata' from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). During the investigations, numerous suspects associated with the incident were arrested.
