The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has issued a call to consumers to exercise restraint in their electricity usage, citing a recent surge in demand coupled with ongoing dry weather conditions.
During a special press briefing on Monday, February 19th, CEB spokesperson and Deputy General Manager, Eng. Noel Priyantha, disclosed that 46 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity have already been consumed in February.
Priyantha highlighted that despite the high demand, hydropower generation has been severely affected, operating at only 20% of its capacity due to the prevailing dry weather conditions. This limited capacity poses challenges to the overall electricity supply in the country.
The plea for conservation comes amidst concerns over the strain on the national power grid and the potential for electricity shortages.
