Gamini B. Dissanayake, the media spokesperson of the Prisons Department, disclosed to the ZiraDaily that the current inmate count at the facility has surged to 350, surpassing its intended capacity of 185 by a significant margin.
The alarming situation has spurred authorities into action, with urgent measures being initiated to address the congestion effectively.
However, Dissanayake emphasized that expanding the hospital's capacity is not feasible at this juncture. Instead, efforts will focus on discharging patients regularly to alleviate overcrowding.
