Finance State Minister Ranjith Siambalapitiya has announced the allocation of funds for the procurement of high-quality air rifles to farmers' organizations in the Kegalle district of Sri Lanka.
This decision, aimed at addressing the escalating issue of the toque monkey population, remains firm despite potential impacts.
Speaking to the media, Minister Siambalapitiya emphasized the severity of the monkey threat, particularly in the Kegalle district, where it has significantly affected daily life, even for schoolchildren unable to hold onto their food without interference. While exploring alternative solutions, such as sterilization surgeries, the Minister highlighted the challenges involved in capturing and transporting monkeys for such procedures.
In response to the urgency of the situation, Minister Siambalapitiya announced the prompt utilization of decentralized funds to provide air rifles to 600 farmers' organizations in the Kegalle district. This initiative aims to empower local communities to take immediate action in managing the toque monkey population.
