Prof. Jayantha Jayawardana, a distinguished figure in Sri Lanka's medical community, has been reinstated as a member of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).
His reinstatement comes after he was abruptly removed by former Minister of Health, Keheliya Rambukwella, sparking widespread criticism for the lack of due cause.
The decision to reinstate Prof. Jayawardana was made by the current Minister of Health, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana. According to official sources, his term of office is now set for five years, unless otherwise decided as per the ordinance.
Speaking on his reinstatement, Prof. Jayawardana expressed gratitude while emphasizing the unlawful and arbitrary nature of his previous termination. He officially resumed his duties on February 14, 2024.
Prof. Jayawardana's removal from the SLMC, including his position as Vice President last October, had raised concerns within the medical community and beyond. Critics pointed out the lack of reasonable justifications provided for his removal and criticized the violation of principles of natural justice.
With extensive experience and leadership roles in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as significant contributions to medical education and healthcare administration in Sri Lanka, Prof. Jayawardana's reinstatement has been welcomed by many as a step towards restoring integrity within the country's medical regulatory framework.
