A police constable, has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by Nuwara Eliya High Court Judge Viraj Weerasuriya for sexually assaulting an unmarried woman. The court has also ordered constable to pay a compensation of 500,000 rupees to the victim along with a fine of 20,000 rupees.

The accused who was stationed at the High Forest Police Station in the Nuwara Eliya Police Division, will serve imprisonment with hard labor in addition to the fines imposed. Moreover, failure to pay the fines will result in an extension of his prison sentence by another three years.

The case, filed in 2019, accused the constable of sexually assaulting the woman while on duty at the Police Station. Following an initial investigation, the police department temporarily suspended his service. However, upon an appeal submitted by the constable, he was reinstated to the service of the same police station.
