Customs officials in Sri Lanka have intercepted a significant smuggling attempt, seizing four containers falsely declared as fabric imports from Malaysia.

The containers, in reality, contained a staggering 160,000 pieces of readymade garments, with an estimated value exceeding Rs.150 million.

Each container held between 33,000 to 44,000 garments, which were destined for individuals residing in Panadura, Wattala, and Maradana. The contraband was brought to light by vigilant Customs sleuths, who promptly initiated investigations upon discovering the discrepancy in the declared contents.

State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya was briefed on the seized items, underscoring the significance of the operation in curbing illicit trade. Further investigations into the matter are being spearheaded by Senior Director Customs RTF Nimal Samaratunga and Senior Deputy Director Nalin Premaratne, alongside a dedicated Customs team.

It's estimated that had the smuggling attempt gone undetected, the Customs department would have incurred a loss of approximately Rs.60 million in tax revenue. This interception underscores the ongoing efforts to safeguard the nation's economy and prevent illicit activities within its borders.
