The Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Division recorded statements from the driver of the container truck involved in the collision with former State Minister Sanath Nishantha's vehicle, a process spanning approximately five hours.
According to the driver of the former State Minister's vehicle, as relayed to the police, while attempting to overtake the container truck, a white car approached at high speed from behind. In an effort to avoid a collision, the vehicle swerved left, leading to the accident.
Contrary to this account, the container truck driver asserted an inability to recall any white car or overtaking vehicle, only recalling the impact of the former State Minister's speeding vehicle on the rear of the container truck.
CID investigations thus far have substantiated that no other vehicle overtook the former State Minister's vehicle at the time of the accident on the Katunayake Expressway, resulting in the fatalities of the former State Minister and his personal security officer.
In response to a formal complaint filed by attorney-at-law Chamari Priyanka, the wife of the late former State Minister Sanath Nishantha, CID initiated a thorough inquiry into the incident, citing suspicions surrounding the accident's circumstances.
Further scrutiny involved the examination of CCTV footage by CID's Homicide Organized Crime Investigation Division, revealing the presence of a solitary white car traveling towards Colombo on the expressway during the accident. This vehicle was observed passing Ja-Ela and proceeding towards Colombo long before the collision.
The CID's interrogation of the container truck driver was prompted by the complaint filed by attorney-at-law Chamari Priyanka, urging a formal investigation into the matter due to suspicions regarding the accident's nature. Consequently, CID has commenced a comprehensive probe into the incident leading to the demise of the former State Minister and his personal security guard.
