The Police Sergeant who tragically lost his life on the morning of February 12th, after being shot while attempting to apprehend a suspect in the Malwathu Hirpitiya area, has been posthumously promoted.

In accordance with the directive of Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa told Zira Daily that the fallen officer has been elevated to the rank of Sub-Inspector (SI).

The incident occurred on Saturday, February 10th, when a team of officers from the Malwathu Hiripitiya Police Station sought to detain a suspect in the Batepola area. A scuffle ensued, during which the suspect attempted to seize the firearm of the officer involved. Tragically, the firearm discharged, causing injuries to the 51-year-old police officer, who hailed from Ihala Lunugama. The suspect fled the scene with the officer’s service firearm.

The injured Police Sergeant was initially admitted to Gampola Hospital and subsequently transferred to Colombo National Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries earlier this morning.
