A Police Sergeant who was shot and injured while attempting to arrest a suspect has died from his injuries at the Colombo National Hospital.

Police said a group of officers from the Malwatuhiripitaya police station attempted to arrest a suspect on Saturday and the suspect tried to snatch a police officer's firearm during a conflict.

It was reported that the police officer was injured when a firearm went off and the suspect fled with the official firearm.

After being admitted to the Gampaha Hospital for treatment, the police sergeant who was injured by the gunshot was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment where he later succumbed to injuries.

The victim, a 51-year-old, was identified as a resident of Lunugama.

Meanwhile, the main suspect involved in the incident has been arrested by the Police Special Task Force (STF) while hiding in a house in Bingiriya.

The police officer's revolver type firearm, 03 rounds of 9 mm ammunition and the three-wheeler in which the 42-year-old suspect came were taken into custody by the STF.

The STF also arrested a 35-year-old woman for aiding the suspect.
