Sri Lanka Customs officers at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) intercepted a janitor employed by a private cleaning company early this morning as she attempted to smuggle gold valued at over Rs. 58 million.
Customs Spokesperson Senior Director Seewali Arukgoda said during a routine search, officers discovered gold jewelry and gold gel weighing up to 2,700 grams concealed in the suspect's handbag.
The 53-year-old suspect was detained for further inquiries.
Arukagoda said that the arrest occurred as the suspect was preparing to leave the airport after completing her shift. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
