The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has intensified its efforts against bakeries across the country, conducting raids on approximately 50 establishments found in violation of regulations outlined in a recent gazette.
The raids, carried out island-wide on the 5th of this month, targeted bakeries failing to adhere to the stipulated standard weight for a loaf of bread and neglecting to display prices as mandated by the gazette.
According to the CAA, legal measures will be taken against the implicated bakeries for their non-compliance with the gazette's directives.
In response to the growing concerns over the consistency of bread weights and pricing transparency, the CAA issued a special gazette specifying the standard weight for loaves of bread and making it obligatory for bakeries to exhibit the weight of bread for sale.
As per the gazette, a standard loaf of bread should weigh 450g, with a permissible deficiency of 13.5g. Likewise, half-loaves must weigh 225g, allowing for a deficiency of 9g.
The CAA emphasized that all bread types, whether manufactured, packed, stored, offered for sale, or sold at retail or wholesale levels, must conform to the weight standards outlined in the extraordinary gazette.
