Sri Lanka's tourism industry kicked off the new year with a bang, welcoming over 200,000 international visitors in January. With a total of 208,253 tourists, the island nation experienced a remarkable 103 percent year-on-year growth compared to January 2023, when it received 102,545 visitors.
Despite maintaining momentum by crossing the 200,000 milestone for two consecutive months, the tourist arrival rate fell below the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority's (SLTDA) expectations. Projections estimated a lower case scenario of 223,179 arrivals and an upper scenario of 241,962 arrivals for January. The actual numbers indicate a shortfall of approximately 6.6 percent from the lower case scenario target.
Moreover, January 2024 saw a slight decrease in tourist arrivals compared to December 2023, which recorded 210,532 visitors. Analysis reveals a weekly arrival average of about 47,000 and a daily arrival average of approximately 6,700.
India remains the primary contributor to Sri Lanka's tourism sector, generating 16 percent of total arrivals with 34,399 visitors. The Russian Federation follows closely in second place, accounting for 15 percent of arrivals with 31,159 tourists. The United Kingdom secures the third position, contributing 8 percent of arrivals with 16,665 international visitors.
Germany and China rank as the fourth and fifth largest tourist traffic generators, respectively, while other key markets include France, Poland, Australia, and the United States.
