Colombo Additional Magistrate Keminda Perera ordered the remand of Prasad Ruwan, also known as 'Mattakkuliye Kudu Roshan,' and his brother, who were arrested during Operation 'Yukthiya' while hiding in a Warakapola hotel.
Sub Inspector Prasad Anura Kumara of the Illegal Assets Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department presented the case, stating that further remand is necessary as investigations under the Money Laundering Act concerning the possession of properties worth crores of illegally earned money are ongoing. The Magistrate issued this directive after considering the evidence.
The police revealed that the suspect had purchased land in Warakapola and Ja Ala areas under the guise of a Mattakkuli resident, purportedly using funds from drug trafficking, and had spent millions constructing houses.
The identified properties have been frozen under Section 7(1) of the Money Laundering Act, with efforts underway to secure High Court orders for confiscation.
Prasad Ruwan appeared in court via Skype from Boossa Prison, while the second suspect was presented by the Randev Prison Authority.
The suspects' legal representatives requested bail, citing frozen properties for two years that cannot be transferred or disposed of.
After considering both sides, the magistrate ordered the suspects' remand for seven days, with a bail decision scheduled for that date.
