Based on the information provided by the Sri Lanka Army in the year 2023, the Sri Lanka Police has arrested 482 people on illegal drug trafficking during the raids conducted by the Sri Lanka Police and the Special Task Force.
The Army said recent operations have uncovered large quantities of illicit substances, including 320 kg of Kerala Ganja, 93 kg of Cannabis, and 03 kg of Crystal Methamphetamine (Ice). Apart from that, heroin, mawa drugs, kush drugs and hash (Hashish) drugs have also been seized in large scale based on the army intelligence.
The collective efforts have led to the confiscation of almost 500,000 ganja plants, 350,000 drugs, and 54,000 illegally imported cigarettes. Legal proceedings have been initiated by the Sri Lanka Police and law enforcement agencies against those involved.
The group also includes 15 suspects who were arrested with nearly four thousand liters of Goda and four hundred liters of illegal local liquor.
Also, according to the information provided by the Army in 2024, nearly four kilograms of the ice drug was seized by Police Narcotics Bureau and that was the largest haul of the drug ice seized on land in the country in recent times.
Also, in the year 2024, according to the information provided by the Army Intelligence, nearly 163 kg of Kerala ganja, nearly 190 kg of local ganja, 2170 kg of illegal beedi leaves, 39380 illegal cigarettes, 4780 pills, 84698 ganja plants, have detected by the Sri Lanka Police and Special Task Force and also have arrested 29 suspects along with 225 liters of Goda.
Meanwhile, the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage has instructed the Security Force Commanders and all relevant bodies to expand their intelligence duties regarding illegal drugs.
