The Sri Lankan Fisheries Department has confirmed the successful rescue of a Sri Lankan fishing trawler, which was hijacked by Somali pirates while sailing in the Arabian Sea.

The vessel, carrying six crew members, was captured on January 27th, triggering a coordinated response by maritime authorities.
In a joint operation conducted by the Seychelles Coast Guard and the Sri Lanka Navy, the hijacked trawler was located and liberated from the grips of the pirates. The Director General of the Fisheries Department commended the collaborative efforts of both nations' maritime forces, highlighting their swift response and effective coordination in securing the vessel's release.
During the operation, three Somali pirates were apprehended, marking a significant breakthrough in efforts to combat piracy activities in the region. The successful rescue mission underscores the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding maritime security and ensuring the safety of seafarers navigating perilous waters.
Currently, the rescued Sri Lankan trawler is under escort and en route to the Victoria Harbour in Seychelles, where further assessments and debriefings are expected to take place.
